One Family One Year Four Graduations

Jun 13th, 2007 by john | 0

How often does one family have four graduations in one year — all with different degrees?
Gregg's Graduation
Gregg Marutzky, our lead evangelist, graduated on May 12, 2007 from Abilene Christian University with a Doctor of Ministry degree. Gregg has been serving in the ministry for twenty-five years since 1982. He began his ministry at the University of Colorado as a campus minister and has ministered in San Diego, Boston, Denver, Los Angeles, and Dallas before moving to Omaha a year ago. Gregg and Cathy have been married for twenty-six years and have two daughters; Mandy a recent graduate of the University of Texas and Megan a sophomore at Abilene Christian University.

The project Gregg presented for his degree was entitled, “A Transforming Leadership Model for the Denver Church of Christ.” Gregg studied Paul’s pastoral leadership in 1 and 2 Corinthians to develop a model that he introduced to the leadership of the Denver Church of Christ. The study focused on Paul’s leadership style in contrast to his opponents’ leadership approach in the Corinthian church. The thesis of the work is the necessity for cruciform leadership which imitates Christ’s servant style. Paul models Christ’s leadership by allowing God’s divine power to be displayed in his weaknesses. True leadership is redemptive due to reliance upon divine power and embodiment of the cross. Paul embodied the cross by building up the church, participating in the mission of God and depending upon the grace of God. Spiritual leadership is full of grace and truth. Godly leadership boasts in the works of God and does not dare to adopt worldly methods which were the approach of Paul’s opponents.

Gregg has been pursuing his theological education for many years including a Master of Science degree in Ministry and a Master of Divinity degree, both from Pepperdine University. A couple of benefits of biblical scholarship according to Dr. Marutzky include, “a comprehensive understanding of the Bible and spiritual transformation.”

Megan's Graduation
An interesting phenomenon occurred in the Marutzky household within the span of a year. Megan (pictured above) graduated from Denver Christian High School in June 2006. She now attends Abilene Christian University as a Bible and Communication Major and will be a sophomore next fall.

Cathy's Graduation
A week after Mandy graduated, her mother, Cathy graduated in December 2006 from the University of North Texas with a Master of Education degree in Counseling. Cathy is an elementary school counselor in Omaha specializing in “Play Therapy.” Many institutions have benefited from their tuitions. Congratulations Dr. Marutzky and family!
